Detail

Mount Ramelau is the highest peak in Timor-Leste, standing at 2,963 meters above sea level. On clear days, you can see both the north and south coasts from the summit.

The peak often rises above the clouds, offering breathtaking views—especially at sunrise and sunset. Be prepared for cold weather, as overnight temperatures can drop to freezing year-round.

The trek to the summit takes about 3 hours and starts from the highland village of Hato Builiko.

Info to know

  • Note to travellerIt is most important to be flexible, stay positive and willing to accept all challenges that arise. In developing countries remote area, please do not compare with the standards you are used to back home. The climb up to Mt. Ramelau is quite difficult, with the slippery rocks and landslide areas. The Guest house is a very simple guest house, electricity will be available from 7pm to 12midnight. Please expect simple dishes at the guesthouse.

  • Palácio do Governo (Government Palace)This grand colonial building is one of the most iconic landmarks in Dili. Originally built during Portuguese rule, A symbol of East Timor’s colonial past and political transformation after independence in 2002.
  • Casa EuropaIt represents the continuing relationship between Timor Leste and the European Union, especially in the country’s rebuilding phase post-independence.
  • Motael ChurchIs the oldest Catholic church in Timor-Leste, built in the 1930s. It’s not just a place of worship, but also a powerful symbol of resistance. In 1991, it became a site of a major political turning point—when a young activist was shot and killed here during a protest, sparking the Santa Cruz Massacre. Today, it's a peaceful and sacred place that carries deep emotional and historical weight for many Timorese people.
  • Farol LighthouseStanding tall with its white-and-red tower overlooking the sea. Originally built by the Portuguese, it served as a navigational guide for ships entering Dili harbor. It's not just a lighthouse—it's a nostalgic reminder of Dili's maritime history and strategic importance during colonial times. The surrounding Farol neighborhood is also one of the city’s most scenic areas.
  • Presidential PalaceThis is the official residence and workplace of the President of Timor-Leste. The palace itself is modern in style but reflects local culture in its design elements. Located near the waterfront, it's a symbol of national pride and independence. Although visitors can’t go inside, you can admire the structure from outside and learn about its role in the young nation’s leadership and governance.
  • Tais Marketthe best place to experience Timorese weaving traditions. "Tais" are handwoven textiles made by women using traditional methods passed down through generations. Each pattern and color combination tells a story—often representing a region, a family, or a cultural belief. The market is a great place to interact with local artisans, learn about the meaning behind the patterns, and even bring home a unique souvenir.

Day 1✈️ Touchdown Timor Leste

Upon arrival at Nicolau Lobato International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by our friendly team.

Start your adventure with a short city tour of Dili, including:

  • Tasi-Tolu Peace Park, known for its three salt lakes and historical significance.
  • Pope John Paul II Monument, offering peaceful coastal views and honoring his 1989 visit

Then enjoy a scenic drive past:

  • Palacio de Governo
  • Casa Europa
  • Motael Church
  • Farol Lighthouse
  • Presidential Palace
  • A quick stop at the Tais Market, famous for colorful handwoven fabrics

📍 Final stop: Hike or drive up to Cristo Rei (Jesus Statue) perched on Cape Fatucama, overlooking the ocean.

As we climb higher into the mountain range, the air gets cooler and the views more dramatic.

🍽️ 07:00 – Return to the guesthouse for breakfast
🚗 Begin the journey back to Dili, with a lunch stop again in Aileu
